Students applying to language-based university programmes in Türkiye take YDT, the foreign-language session of YKS. It mainly measures vocabulary, grammar, translation and reading comprehension; there is no speaking or listening section.
What does YDT include?
Question families commonly include vocabulary, grammar, sentence completion, translation, paragraph completion, dialogue and reading comprehension. Strong performance depends on both broad language knowledge and controlled timing.
Learn vocabulary in context
Word lists can create short-term recognition without reliable recall. Meet vocabulary inside passages, group related words and revisit them through spaced review. This improves reading speed as well as memory.
Build reading strategy
Long paragraphs become easier when you identify purpose, contrast, cause and evidence. Practise locating what the question asks for instead of translating the entire passage from the first word.
Balance school and exam preparation
Final-year workload is real. A sustainable plan uses shorter regular sessions, weekly review and mock tests that become more frequent gradually. A perfect plan that cannot be followed is less useful than a realistic one.
Use mock tests to guide study
After each test, separate errors by topic and cause. Was the problem an unknown word, sentence structure, rushing or a weak question strategy? The answer should determine the next week's work.
A note for families
Support works best when expectations are realistic and communication stays calm. Attendance, routines and progress can be followed without turning every practice result into pressure.
