Many learners with an international goal face the same question: TOEFL or IELTS? Both are respected English-proficiency exams, but their delivery, task types and score systems feel different. The right choice depends on your target institution and the format in which you perform best.
Key differences at a glance
| TOEFL iBT | IELTS | |
|---|---|---|
| Delivery | Computer-based | Computer or paper options, depending on centre |
| Speaking | Recorded through a microphone | Live interview with an examiner |
| Scoring | 0–120 | 0–9 band |

Test length and current procedures can change, so confirm the latest details on the official exam websites before booking.
Let your application decide first
Check the exact requirement published by the university, employer or immigration route. Some organisations accept both; others specify an exam type, module or minimum section score. Never rely only on a general country rule when the receiving institution publishes its own criteria.
Which speaking format suits you?
TOEFL asks you to speak into a microphone within strict preparation and response times. IELTS uses a live interview. If one format feels unfamiliar, try a sample from both before deciding; comfort with the task can affect how clearly you show your actual English.
Think about the whole task mix
TOEFL uses integrated academic tasks that combine reading and listening. IELTS Academic includes graph or process description in Writing Task 1, while General Training uses a letter. Reading question types also differ. Choose after experiencing the workflow, not only after comparing score tables.
Score comparisons are approximate
Conversion tables are useful for orientation, but the receiving organisation's requirement is what counts. Pay attention to section minimums as well as the overall score.
