YDS is Türkiye's multiple-choice foreign-language examination used in many academic and public-sector processes. Because it tests reading, vocabulary, grammar and translation rather than speaking or listening, it needs a focused preparation method.
Begin with a score and topic diagnosis
Take a timed practice test and record more than the total. Separate lost points by vocabulary, grammar, translation, paragraph questions and reading comprehension. This reveals whether your first priority is knowledge, strategy or pace.
Learn vocabulary through recurring contexts
Academic words become memorable when you meet them in sentences and passages. Use spaced review, word families and common collocations instead of relying on Turkish equivalents alone.
Treat grammar as a reading tool
YDS grammar questions are important, but grammar also helps you unpack long sentences. Practise identifying the main clause, connectors, reference words and reduced structures inside real passages.
Work question type by question type
Sentence completion, cloze tests, translation, paragraph completion and irrelevant-sentence questions each reward different clues. Learn the logic separately, then combine them in mixed timed sets.
Increase reading speed without guessing
Read for paragraph purpose and argument before translating details. Mark where evidence appears and review why each wrong option fails. Speed grows from recognition and control, not from rushing.
Use mock exams as feedback
A mock exam is valuable only when reviewed. Track mistakes and timing after every test, then adjust the next week's study plan.
Prepare with a clear target
